The Louis Vuitton Foundation, housed in Frank Gehry’s remarkable landmark in Paris’ Bois de Bologne, has mounted one of the most historically important exhibitions of our time.
More than half of the extraordinary collection assembled by Moscow textile magnate Serge Shchukin at the turn of the 20th century has been brought together from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Pushkin State Museum in Moscow, where they form the foundations of those important collections of early modern art.
One room in the beautiful Vuitton exhibition is hung with a symphony of pre-1918 Henri Matisse masterpieces. Shchukin obviously had the pick of his paintings.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York has great examples of the period, but these are the best on European soil.
