Edo Lacquer

Roger Thomas created this plaid box surface as an exploration of an 18th century lacquer technique he discovered on an Edo period painted Japanese box,  found in an antique shop in Paris’s 7th arrondissement. “The simplest technique of variation in line weight laid at random caused the illusion of extreme depth on the surface of the rectangular lid,” he says. “I have increased the scale for the same illusive effect for the walls.”
