I was walking through Amsterdam’s magnificent Rijksmuseum when it occurred to me how very different it would have been to walk that very same ground during the golden age of Flemish painting in the 17th century.

(Sorry that it was not fashionable to paint ladies’ shoes, partly for modesty’s sake but party because most were invisible under yards of skirts.)
